Kars Castle
The Kars Castle, or Kars Fortress as it is sometimes called, stands on top of a rugged hill near the river Kars, overlooking the city of Kars. Built in 1153 for Sultan Melik Izzeddin Saltuk II by the Saltukids, the castle underwent several renovations after various battles in the Ottoman era. The remaining stone structure provides an extensive view of Kars, reflecting its historical significance to the Byzantines, Seljuks, Ottomans, and Russians.
