About Hippodrome Square
Hippodrome Square was once the center of public life in Byzantine Constantinople. Built in the 3rd century, it served as a stadium for chariot races and ceremonies.
Though the original structure no longer survives, monuments like the Egyptian Obelisk, Serpent Column, and Obelisk of Theodisius still stand.
The square remains as an open-air museum reflecting the city’s Roman and Byzantine roots, located behind Blue Mosque and paths its way to the narrow antique streets of Sultanahmet area.
