Beach Cemetery (John Simpson’s Grave)

About Beach Cemetery (John Simpson’s Grave)

Beach Cemetery is an important site on the Gallipoli Peninsula of Turkey as it is the burial ground of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, one of the most famous Australians who was a stretcher bearer during World War I.

Set along the shore, it holds over 390 graves, including that of John Simpson, the legendary stretcher bearer with a donkey.

A product of courage and sacrifice, Simpson became well-known and famous through acts of bravery against opposition.

In memory of Simpson and other soldiers who died during the Gallipoli Campaign, Beach Cemetery is still in use today.

Surrounded by sea breeze and stillness, the cemetery offers a deeply moving space of honor, sacrifice, and remembrance, framed by the blue waters of the Aegean.
