Plutonium
About Plutonium
Plutonium at Hierapolis was a sacred cave dedicated to Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld.
Located near Temple of Apollo, it released toxic gases from a deep geologic fault, which ancient priests claimed proved its divine power.
While other species died from the fumes, priests of the time would demonstrate their divine protection by entering the cave and returning unharmed.
In this sense, the Plutonium embodies elements of the underworld that are mysterious and threatening and served as a place of ritual and religious refuge.
