St. John Basilica
About St. John Basilica
Constructed in the sixth century, the Basilica of St. John is an essential, important early Christian church located in Selcuk, Turkey.
The basilica once stood as a grand Byzantine pilgrimage church, shaped like a cross with six domes.
It was built on the assumed tomb of Saint John the Apostle. St John Basilica had a large central nave, impressive columns, and fragments of beautiful paintings and mosaics.
The church's entire interior was adorned with colorful mosaics and marble plates. As a result, the whole church appeared as if it was wrapped in oriental magnificent carpets.
Though now in ruins, its marble columns, mosaics, and tomb site still reflect its sacred past.
Set on Ayasuluk Hill, it overlooks Ephesus, offering both spiritual depth and sweeping Aegean views.
