Galata Tower

About Galata Tower

Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower located in the Galata quarter of Istanbul, near the northern end of Galata Bridge. Built by Genoese in 1348, it served as a watchtower within the city's defensive walls.

Standing over 60 meters tall, it offers wide views of the Golden Horn, Bosphorus, and the historic peninsula. Over the centuries, it has been used as a prison, observatory, and fire lookout, reflecting the city’s layered history.

As an interesting fact, there is a legend that goes by saying Hezarfen Celebi built an artificial wing in 1632, which was said to be inspired by older scientists like Leonardo da Vinci and works of aerodynamicists.

He took off from the top of the Galata Tower and flew across Bosphorus Straits. He was able to fly three kilometers off and landed at the Asian side.

In Turkish folklore, Hezarfen’s adventure is considered one of the earliest attempts of flying and became a symbol for getting out of the box and seeking new possibilities.
