Syria Avenue

About Syria Avenue

Syria Avenue in Laodicea was one of the city’s main colonnaded streets, stretching from the east and connecting Laodicea to major trade routes leading toward Syria.

The defining feature of Syria Avenue is the impressive colonnaded street which consists of rows of columns along both sides of the street.

Flanked by columns, shops, and public buildings, it was both a commercial and ceremonial axis.

In this instance, it demonstrates the level of engineering reached.

Several important public buildings, shops, and temples were likely to be along the avenue and it would have been a center of social and economic activity.
