Myra Ancient City

About Myra Ancient City

Myra Ancient City is located in Demre, Turkey. Dating back to the 5th century BCE, Myra played a key role in Lycian and Roman history.

It’s also closely connected to St. Nicholas, who served as bishop here in the 4th century, adding religious significance to the site. It is considered as one the most important cities of Lycia.

It is most famous due to its remarkable hewn rock tombs and an ancient theater.

Beginning in the 7th century CE, Myra’s decline commenced due to the influx of Arab settlers, the port becoming increasingly silted, and even the impact of forces of nature, and was ultimately abandoned.
