About Necropolis

Necropolis of Hierapolis is one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Turkey, stretching over 2 kilometers along the city’s northern and southern roads.

It has three division, north, south and west. The north one is the largest one in Hierapolis with more than 1200 graves.  

It contains thousands of tombs, sarcophagi, and family mausoleums from Hellenistic, Roman, and early Christian periods.

Built with local limestone and travertine, the graves reflect varied beliefs and burial customs.

Each tomb contains an inscription pertaining to the name and details of the person who is buried there and involves clubs within the city and the activities of those clubs.
