The Bouleuterion (Senate Building)
The Senate Building, or Bouleuterion, as it was called, was the center of political life in cities like Troy and Ephesus.
It is a rectangular stone structure which served as a meeting hall for the city’s council of elders and key civic decisions such as laws were deliberated there.
Its semi-circular seating and a central speaker raised platform is a precursor to modern day democracy.
Its archeological remains tell us of the public administration and public debate of the ancient civilizations and how they shaped their civilization’s destiny.
