City Walls and the Gates of Iznik

City Walls and Gate of Iznik encircle the ancient city of Nicaea and are among the best, preserved fortification systems of Anatolia.

The walls that were first constructed during the Roman time and later strengthened by the Byzantine, extend for almost five kilometers and contain the grand gates like the Istanbul, Lefke, and Gol Gates.

The towers, moats, and inscriptions tell the story of countless defense and restoration over the centuries.

The fortifications, which are in Iznik, show the citys strategic and political importance.
