Gumusler Monastery

Gumusler Monastery is a rock cut monastic complex that was carved out of volcanic stone near Nigde and it is dated back to the Byzantine period.

While the famous Cappadocia fairy chimneys are basically surface formations, this monastery has been designed as an underground complex with courtyards, chapels, living quarters, and a refectory.

The monastery's frescoes, very well preserved, that depict a rare smiling Virgin Mary among others, are a testimony of early Christian art and monastic life.

Situated close to the site of Gumusler Monastery, it sheds light on remote religious communities in Anatolia during the medieval period.
