Mor Hananyo Monastery
Mor Hananyo Monastery, or more popularly as Saffron Monastery, is one of the Syriac Orthodox holy places around Mardin.
It is quarried from local saffron stone, sited near the town.
It was built in the 5th century and it has long been a powerful center of Christianity. The cloisters are beautifully arched, there is an ancient chapel and even a room that functions as a celestial calendar.
The monastery is still operational and continues to be a strong symbol of Christianity in the Mesopotamia region and the tranquility, faith, and heritage of one of the oldest communities in the world.
