Demre (Myra)
Demre, known in antiquity as Myra, is a historic town near Antalya famed for its rock-cut Lycian tombs, grand Roman theater, and the Church of St. Nicholas.
Especially during the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the city was seen as a great political and economic force.
The tombs carved into cliffs and detailed stonework tell of a rich past. By the 4th century of our era, it was known as the residence and working place of St. Nicholas.
The “father” of the Christmas tradition, Santa Claus, was reputed for his acts of kindness.
Surrounded by orchards and coastal views, Demre blends archaeological wonder with serene Mediterranean charm, making it a key stop in Lycian heritage tours.
