Karakus Tumulus (Monumental Tomb)
King Mithridates II constructed Karakus Tumulus, a royal burial mound from the Commagene Kingdom, for his mother and family in the first century BCE.
It is located close to Adiyaman. The site, which has tall limestone pillars and symbolic carvings, was named "Black Bird" after the eagle statue that used to sit atop its columns.
With sweeping views of the Euphrates valley and echoes of the splendor of a vanished kingdom, this solemn hilltop tomb honors royal women and ancestral honor.
