Lausanne Monument and Square

The Lausanne Monument and Square in Burdur commemorates the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne that established the borders of present-day Türkiye. This important symbol of national unity is located in Burdur, close to City Center. The monument includes symbolic sculptures related to national unity, sovereignty, and peace. While most monuments are a part of the formal city fabric with parking, so people come and go and they do not typically linger, this place is designed for gathering as a civic space or for memory, where historiographical reflection and public life converge. Given its patriotic design, and the historical meaning embedded in these kinds of monuments, the site is appropriate for audiences as they are called to recall memories of Türkiye’s founding, and recalls the Sacrifice required to gain independence.
