Ozkonak Underground City
The Ozkonak Underground City found in Cappadocia is one of the many amazing underground cities found in the region.
Cut out from the volcanic rocks, it has existed since the ancient era and was exploited by early Christians as a sanctuary from their aggressors. Smaller than Derinkuyu or Kaymakli, Ozkonak is unique for its communication tunnels, trap holes, and ventilation systems.
It is a multi-level cross-structured city with apartments, storerooms, cooking rooms and even a system for air circulation which was rather unparalleled in engineering at that time.
These features allowed entire populations to live hidden underground during times of conflict.
Its compact layout and clever defenses reveal the ingenuity of ancient Anatolian survival beneath the earth.
