Selimiye Mosque
If you're looking for a great example of classical Ottoman architecture, look no further than Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, designed by the master architect Mimar Sinan for Sultan Selim II in 1575.
The mosque defines the skyline in Edirne with its big dome, bigger than the Dome of Hagia Sophia, and four tall slender minarets.
For those inside, the mosque literally dazzles with its Iznik tiles, calligraphy, and perfect symmetry. The mosque represents Mimar Sinan's zenith and accomplishments expressed through architecture.
Selimiye is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it represents the high mark of artistic accomplishment and artistic imperial vision in Ottoman history.
