Serefiye Cistern (Theodosius)

Serefiye Cistern, also known as the Theodosius Cistern, is a 5th-century underground water reservoir taking place in Istanbul’s Old City district.

It was built during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 408 to 450 AD.

Located near the Forum of Theodosius, the cistern stored water brought by the Valens Aqueduct and distribute that water through the city.

Now with its restoration with modern lighting and mirrors, its 32 marble columns which reflect both Byzantine engineering and artistic presentation of modern art.

The cistern also hosts classical music concerts and important event now.
