Sultan Bayezid II Complex and Museum of Health
Built in 1488 by Sultan Bayezid II, the Sultan Bayezid II Complex and Museum of Health in Edirne is a significant 15th-century site that juxtaposes early medical science with Ottoman architecture.
At the start, the complex included a mosque, hospital and medical school, all under Bayezid II's girl. The darüşşifa (hospital) provided patient treatments that incorporated sounds from music, sound of water, and herbal remedies. It was centuries ahead of its given time.
The structure is now a museum displaying medical instruments, manuscripts, life-sized models and documents chronicling the customs and beliefs surrounding health in the Ottoman Empire.
The sultan's legacy of education and health is preserved here.
