Deir-Al-Zafaran (Saffron Monastery)

Deir al-Zafaran Monastery or Mor Hananyo Monastery derives it's words from Saffron Monastery, is affiliated to Syriac Orthodox Church and found close to Mardin in Turkey.

Founded in 493 AD and transitioned from a temple of the sun god, Shamash, the monastery was a Patriarchal Seat from 1160 to 1932.

The monastery was made from striking stones, saffron in color, which gives it a glowing appearance.

Among them are Virgin Mary Church, the Mor Hananyo Church which has a dome, and the Beth Qadishe (House of Saints) which contains the tombs of 52 patriarchs.

Monastery helped preserve Syriac literature which was declining by having a printing press established in the 19th century.

Monastery still stands as a center of religious activity and reflects the rich history of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
