Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is an underground water reservoir built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and now it stands as one of the most interesting sights in Istanbul.

Located in Istanbul’s Old City, it once supplied water to the Great Palace and nearby buildings with its sophisticated engineering.

Supported by 336 marble columns, the cistern has a quiet, mysterious atmosphere. Two famous Medusa head carvings lie at the base of columns, adding to its unique character.

Its design reflects the engineering skill of the Byzantine Empire. Since its renovation, the cistern offers night tours as well.
