Kaymakli Underground City
Kaymakli Underground City is one of Cappadocia’s largest subterranean settlements, carved into soft volcanic rock beneath Nevsehir Province.
This multi-level city was constructed with soft volcanic rock. The history of this structure bears the trace that the city once sheltered thousands during times of invasion, complete with living quarters, storage rooms, churches, and air shafts.
Used from Hittite times and expanded by early Christians, Kaymakli reveals the region’s hidden architectural ingenuity and survival strategies deep below the surface of central Anatolia.
